Malta

Set in the heart of the Mediterranean, Malta offers the British health traveller a home from home, but with a warmer climate! No language barriers, as English is their second language, driving on the left hand side and even 3 pin plug sockets for your hairdryer or laptop it's no surprise that this destination is becoming an increasingly popular choice for those choosing overseas surgery.

Hospitals & Facilities

The modern, well equipped hospitals have highly trained staff with an outstanding reputation. The private rooms, with en-suite bathrooms, sky television and individual catering services provide you with all that is needed for a comfortable stay.

The hospitals offer a full range of healthcare services from basic health checks, cosmetic surgery to knee and hip replacements and open heart surgery. Most of the highly skilled surgeons are members of the UK General Medical Council, are listed on the UK Specialist Register, and have gained their post graduate qualifications in the UK.

For those concerned about infections you can be reassured that the hospitals have not had a case of MRSA and in addition are fitted with laminar flow ventilation, which helps reduce risk of post-op infections by around 50 percent.

Malta Healthcare is rated No.5 in the world, by comparison the UK is No.18*.

Travel

Only 3 hours from the UK and flights scheduled daily from most major airports, Malta offers great convenience for the health traveller. Flights cost from around £90 and as part of the EU no visas are required.

Upon arrival Surgery Worldwide will arrange for you to be met and escorted to your hotel, as well as all transfers for hospitals visits. The hotels we recommend are within a 30 minute journey of the airport and 15 minutes of the hospitals.

As the Island is only 27km in length by 14.5km wide getting around doesn't take long. For any sight seeing public transport is very reliable and inexpensive.

Our team can provide further tourist information and sight seeing tips.

Accommodation

The Island has a wealth of history surrounded by a serene atmosphere and its extensive range of 4 and 5 star hotels with spa facilities, private pools and sea views deliver you the opportunity to relax and recuperate before the journey home.

We recommend a range of 8 hotels, with B & B, half or full board stays and prices range from £43** per night.

A number of hotels have physiotherapy and hydro pools that are ideal when recovering from knee or hip replacement surgery and all the recommended hotels are geared to assist with your recuperation.

Climate

As a Mediterranean island Malta's weather is strongly influenced by the sea. The climate is similar to that of southern Italy or southern Greece, with summers that are warm, dry and very sunny, and winters that mild and short with some rainfall.

Summer - It rarely rains from April to August. July and August are Malta's hottest months with daytime temperatures usually above 30ºC (86ºF) and quite often above 35ºC (95ºF).

Winter - Daytime temperatures average 15 ºC (59ºF) while night-time temperatures never fall below 0ºC (32ºF). Hence, there is never any snow. Most of Malta's rainfall is from September to December, though quite minimal compared with the UK, as it's only 800 mm (32 inches) throughout the year.

Please remember that exposure to sun is not recommended following surgery, even with the use of sun block, especially for those who are having facial cosmetic procedures.

Currency

Since 1st January 2008, Malta's currency has been the Euro, with the Maltese Pound/Lira no longer excepted.

One of the major banks on the island is HSBC, again offering the UK patient extra convenience.

With the Euro currently so strong against the GBP you may feel that you won't get good value for money, as with other destinations outside of Europe, however surgery in Malta costs at least thirty percent less than the UK and with ‘bargain' promotional flights available Malta is a cost effective destination to consider.
Surgery Worldwide have sent Cosmetic, Orthopaedic and Dentistry patients to Malta with great results and would highly recommend it to those seeking surgery abroad but without the adventure!
